Tartu Student Theatre presents a new production “America”.
The work is also known as “The Man Who Disappeared..”
This is a two-act schizoclown based on Franz Kafka’s unfinished novel “America”.
The servant girl Johanna Brummer seduces (read: rapes) the young schoolboy Karl Rossmann and has a child with him. When his parents find out about this, they send Karl away from home, as far away as possible, to the new world, America. Rossmann’s rich American uncle is waiting for him at the New York immigration office, who promises Karl a brilliant career in America. However, Karl’s “career” ends quickly and the young man’s adventures in search of his place (read: happiness) in the American Machine begin.
The production asks whether an individual has the opportunity to avoid traps – machines – and somehow remain free in an increasingly globalized world?
