Fazil Iskander's "Rabbits and Snakes" is a philosophical fable - an allegory, where the main conflict is between the kingdom of rabbits and snakes. The snakes eat the rabbits by hypnotizing them with their gaze in advance, and the rabbits' solution to the situation is to reproduce more than they are pricked. The rabbit Thinking Head, who doubts the reality of hypnosis, shakes the stable system that has existed until now - the authority of the rabbit king is declining, because the foundation of a functioning society and obedient citizens has been fear (snakes) and grace (hope for the soon-to-arrive cauliflower) loses credibility. The well-being of the snakes also suffers, as they lose their fearsomeness, and in connection with this, the indigenous farmers, whose fields the rabbits regularly raid together with the monkeys and whose fields the snakes have maintained by swallowing the rabbits as contracted sanitation workers, also suffer. The monkeys, however, watch everything from a treetop and always tend to guess something.
