Tartu Student Theatre, together with Helena Käbin, brings to the stage the play “The Boy from the Last Bench” by Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga – a story that delves into the issues of contemporary educational space, the boundaries of private life and the ethics of writing.
A literature teacher finds an exceptionally gripping piece of writing written by a teenager. A boy sitting in the back row of the classroom writes about his classmate’s family life in a way that is both disturbing and fascinating. What begins as a writing exercise quickly turns into something more. Power games begin, where fantasy, reality and ethical boundaries intertwine.
Juan Mayorga is one of the most important contemporary European playwrights, whose work is characterised by moral dilemmas, patterns of power and the precision of language. “The Boy from the Last Bench” is one of his best-known works, which has been staged all over the world.
The director is Helena Käbin (formerly Kesonen), an alumnus of the Tartu Student Theatre, whose style is characterized by spatial sensitivity, imagery and thoughtfulness. The production brings together both new young actors and alumni, creating a common creative space where different experiences and generations meet.
